Two childhood friends from Zellwood, Florida, now Army retirees, have taken up the cause of fixing up their historic hometown cemetery.

Eugene Mason and Gene Reynolds work up to 3 times a week cleaning up and repairing the Tangerine Cemetery near Zellwood, which has its roots as a historically black cemetery that was founded in the 1800s.

Mason said that an article, listing the cemetery as “small and unkempt,” is what motivated him to clean the cemetery. The two men have started a group which meets quarterly and they are planning to form a 501C-3 so they can fund raise for the cemetery and have a proper survey completed, including using ground-penetrating radar.
