The Robert Foreman Cemetery in the community of Bruce, NC, has seen better days. The cemetery was vandalized approximately two years ago and it is believed that the suspects broke in to the graves to steal jewelry and gold tooth fillings among the bones. With no caretakers, the cemetery has languished.
The cemetery is the third oldest cemetery in the county, according to Bob Newton, a member of the Pitt County Historical Society, who has taken up the cause of restoring the site. Unfortunately, this too, has become a struggle as there are no known living ancestors to the interred and the property has been sold.
Newton has taken the project public to help fundraise as estimates for the restoration start at $13,000.00, of which he’s only been able to raise $300.00.
