Do you have a secret you’ve always wanted to share but were too afraid to reveal? Maybe a visit to Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY will help. Starting in April, French artist Sophie Calle‘s interactive piece, title “Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery,” will begin its 25 year stay with the cemetery. The piece is a large, marble obelisk with slots in it where visitors can write a note or secret and place it in the piece. The piece is presented by Creative Time, a New York-based arts non-profit.
“The work provides an ‘opportunity for people to unburden themselves in [a] moment of catharsis, and also a communal sharing of secrets’, says Katie Hollander, Creative Time’s director, who says the project resonated with the organization as ‘reflective in terms of our current political as well as emotional state’ (Art Newspaper, Sophie). The obelisk will be emptied once it is filled and a cremation ceremony will take place, burning the secrets. Creative Time expects Sophie Calle will be in attendance and hosting a “bonfire party.”
