Well, it’s October and that means one thing: Halloween. Every year around this time, people go out and pick up their costumes, buy big bags of candy, and prepare to be scared. Parents help their children get their routes planned for optimal candy collection, secretly so that they can raid their child’s bags when the kids finally go to sleep. It’s a fun and festive time of the year, balanced out with scares galore. It is also a great time to have a bit of fun while educating about local history.
One such group, the Slocum Hollow Players, takes advantage of the holiday to perform in costumes on the local history of the Forest Hill Cemetery in Dunmore, PA. For over 10 years, the acting troupe has dressed up in 19th century garments and given walking tours of the Forest Hill Cemetery during the summers but it has only been the past three years that they have dressed in witch’s clothing, pointy hats and all, and read frightening stories about local events in the Scranton area involving people interred in the cemetery. The nighttime tour brought approximately 30 people, who walked the grounds with the group until rain made it difficult to continue. Overall, the tours have been a fun event for locals, and the actors who lead them.
